Dear Natalie Portman, Tilda Swinton, Isabelle Huppert, Penelope Cruz, Diane von Furstenberg, Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Martin Scorsese, Monica Bellucci, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Harmony Korine, Ethan Cohen, David Lynch, Harrison Ford, and all the rest of you*,
I know that before today, when Roman Polanski had only pleaded guilty to raping that 13-year-old girl in 1979, and been accused of raping that 16-year-old girl in 1986, it was like, Big deal, right? Like, just let the man LIVE! Can’t a convicted child rapist be left alone to hang out in his luxurious French hideaway and keep making movies, upon which endless praise and acclaim will be showered and heaped internationally, these days? Is it so much to ask? And can’t we all just keep working with him — and collecting those sweet, sweet Oscars — like everything is as fine and normal as it totally is?
I get it.
But now that a third accuser has come forward, do you perhaps feel a tiny nagging tug at your beautiful, sun-kissed, juice-cleansed, gold-encrusted consciences? A small, soft voice in the night, reminding you that while art and awards are v cool, so are laws and human beings and, you know, protecting children from sexual abuse?
Just give it a little thought today, maybe, as you hike Runyon Canyon with your adopted dogs, or sip your alkaline water infused with sea mist, or do some press about the prescience and timely necessity of your latest film’s themes of human resilience triumphing over evil and darkness.
Just a little.
Love,
HannahI do not want to see that Natalie Portman video anymore, she supports these predators, she and others like her are not heroes for passionless quips while openly supporting rapists. Stop being so easily impressed.
